The texas sheet cake is a chocolate cake that feels homemade, because it is simple and easy to make, and for this very reason it is a dessert that gives a very cozy feeling. It is wholesome and a comfort food for me.

This is the typical dessert our mom or grandmother would make at home (probably yours too or something similar to this), because it is one of those simple recipes. You put the batter all in the same sheet and are done with it. Plus, is pretty by its own. There is no need to do much to make it look pretty.

How to make Texas sheet cake

The texas sheet cake is a chocolate cake that is baked in a bakign sheet. Then it’s covered with a chocolate frosting and cut into small squares to be eaten little by little, like brownies, with the difference that brownies have a completely different consistency to this cake.

There are many recipes for texas sheet cake that call for pecans on top, and that tastes and looks amazing. You could also use walnuts for example, but in the case of our recipe, we make the basic version of it, with only chocolate frosting on top.

This is a really charming cake, that’s always a good idea because everyone loves it! It’s fluffy, soft and has a very pleasant taste, it’s great! The perfect scenario to make this dessert is for a kids party, because it is perfect to make a large bathc and cut it into small pieces to give to all guests. Plus, this is the type of recipe children love, since it’s made of simple ingredients they know and like.

For the cake:

  • 1 C (225 gr) unsalted butter
  • 5 tbsp (35 gr) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp instant coffee (optional)
  • 1 C (240 ml) boiling water
  • 2 C (260 gr) all purpouse flour
  • 2 C (400 gr) white sugar
  • 1 tsp (5 gr) baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 gr) salt
  • 1/2 C (120 ml) buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, big
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 6 tbsp (90 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 C (112 gr) unsalted butter
  • 5 tbsp (35 gr) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 gr) salt
  • 3 C (370 gr) confectioners sugar (powdered sugar)
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract


For the cake:

  • Preheat the oven to 180° C. Cover with butter paper and grease a rectangular baking pan of approximately 43 cm x 30 cm.
  • In a large bowl, sift the flour with the salt. Add the sugar and mix with a spoon.
  • Separately, in a medium saucepan, add the butter and bring to medium heat. Let it cook for 1 minute until it melts, then add the cocoa powder with the instant coffee and mix with a spoon to integrate.
  • Add the boiling water to the pot, mix with the same spoon and cook for 1 more minute until a smooth and homogeneous mixture is obtained.
  • Remove the pot from the heat, pour the mixture over the bowl with the flour and mix with a balloon whisk until everything is perfectly integrated. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  • Add the buttermilk with the baking soda, eggs and vanilla extract to the same bowl with the chocolate and flour mixture, and beat for about 30 seconds until smooth and homogeneous.
  • Pour this mixture into the mold and spread over the entire surface with a spatula. Bake at 180° C for 20 minutes.

For the frosting:

  • Meanwhile, to make the frosting place the butter in a medium saucepan and bring to medium heat. Cook for 1 minute until melted, add the cocoa powder with the salt, mix and cook for 1 minute more.
  • Remove the pot from the heat, add the milk with the vanilla extract and mix everything very well. Add the powdered sugar and mix carefully until the frosting is very smooth and light.
  • Once ready, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. When it is still warm and without taking it out of the mold, add the frosting on top and spread it all over the surface with a spatula.
  • Let the cake stand for 10 minutes and cut into squares to serve.
