Yogurt jelly (dessert under 7€)

A yogurt jelly, and under 7€? YES. An easy recipe you can make under 7€ (which is really unexpensive nowadays) and that is great for hosting this Valentine’s Day.

If you have not tried a milk or dairy based jelly, you have to. And this is your sign to do it. They are so creamy, soft and dense. A totally different experience compared to a regular jelly (nothing against regular jelly really, I like jelly!).

We had been wanting to start making some dessert recipes that had a limited budget in mind. Of course we all love those specific and over the top dessert or ingredients (and we do have to say not all of our other recipes that don’t state a budget are that expensive either, but some are), but we know we all could use budget friendly desserts.

So, here you have our first recipe having this in mind. And hopefully, if you like it, we will make a lot more of them.

Here you have the list of ingredientes and how much they cost. To be clear, this was in Madrid, Spain, in a supermarket in the center of the city, so this time it is in euros.

  • Unsweetened gelatin (jelly): 2,35€ (the whole package -I used it all)
  • Unsweetened natural yogurt: 2,27€ (1 L)
  • Condensed milk: 1,35€ (the 380gr can)
  • Whipping cream: 0,70€ (I bought a package with 3 small bricks of cream for 2,10€ -only one is needed for the recipe, so 0,70€- )

In recap, in total, I was able to make with yogurt jelly, for 12 people, for 6,67€. What do you think? Let us know what other recipes you would like to see here.

As fot the other ingredientes, for this recipe, we will say marmalade, salt and vegetable oil are pantry staples, so we don’t include them in the budget above, as only a small amount of them is used and most of us have them in our kitchens.

We sill make other recipes buying the ingredients in other cities. But we will specially focus on Mexico and Spain of course, as that is where each of us (Irma and Andrea) live.

Yogurt jelly (dessert under 7€)

Prep Time 20 minutes
Refrigeration Time: 6 hours
Total Time 6 hours 20 minutes
Servings: 12
Course: Dessert, Snack
Cuisine: Mexican

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C (4 fl oz) (120 ml) cold water
  • 1 L unsweetened plain yogurt
  • 1 can (13.40 oz) (380 gr) condensed milk
  • 1/2 C (4 fl oz) (120 ml) whole milk or whipping cream
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Strawberry marmalade, for decorating
  • Vegetable oil, soft flavored for the mold

Method

  1. Place the cold water in a medium microwave-safe bowl and sprinkle all the gelatin on top for it to hydrate. Let it stand for a few minutes.
  2. In a blender or food processor add the plain yogurt, condensed milk, milk or whipping cream and pinch of salt. Blend for approximately 20 seconds until you get a smooth mixture.
  3. Separately, melt the now hydrated gelatin in the microwave for 15-second intervals, i.e., put the bowl in the microwave for 15 seconds and take it out after this time to mix a little with a spoon. Repeat the process until the gelatin is completely melted.
  4. Once the gelatin is melted, carefully add it to the blender mixture and blend for another 20 seconds until all the ingredients are perfectly integrated.
  5. Pour this mixture into a silicone, metal or plastic bundt cake type pan of your choice (which should have a little vegetable oil inside so that the gelatin does not stick to it) and refrigerate for a minimum of 6 hours or overnight.
  6. Once ready, turn out the jelly and place it in a large serving dish (you can sort of try to separate the gelatin from the pan using your fingers, or dip the pan with the gelatin still inside in hot water for a few seconds to make it easier). Decorate with strawberry jam on top and it's ready.

We created this blog as a way to save all the recipes we make at home. We started making mostly desserts a long time ago as a hobbie. It soon turned into something else.
