This fruit salad is one that my mom makes every year for New Year’s Eve. Every year on New Year’s Eve, she would make the same dinner. And this was always the dessert. We all loved it. In fact, this recipe is so common to me that it was difficult to compile and figure out how much of each ingredient to use, because it’s something that comes naturally to us, and we make it to taste.

I didn’t even know what to call the recipe itself. So I’ll call it “Mom’s Mexican christmas apple salad.” And I specify that it’s our mom’s because I know that this same fruit salad has many other versions.

I know that in Mexico it is made in other ways, with other fruits, or by adding mayonnaise to the mixture, for example. I only know and have only tried my mom’s version. And I will stick with this version for the rest of my life. Not because I think there can’t be a better or tastier version (which I doubt), but rather because trying this dessert brings back so many memories.

Every time I try this salad, I am transported back to when I was little. And suddenly I am back again in one of those New Year’s Eve nights, with Kenny G’s smooth jazz playing in the background, which my dad loved so much, grabbing all the Ferrero Rocher chocolates I could from the table top, after having gone out to buy wine and classic Pringles earlier in the afternoon. I see the dining room table with lit candles, and all my siblings and our parents with glasses full of sangria in their hands, each taking turns saying the things they are grateful for in life (encouraged by Irma, who has always been very good with words).

And it’s because of all this (as if that weren’t enough) that I’ll never change the way we make this fruit salad. I’ll call it Christmas salad, because even though we always make it on New Year’s Eve, it’s a recipe that’s actually perfect for the whole season.

Especially because it’s great for when you have a lot of people over. You leave it in the fridge and serve it when someone wants something sweet. And you’ll realize that the dessert seems to never end. It goes a long way.
